ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present, Afterglow, the latest body of paintings by leading Australian artist, ROBERT OWEN. These visually-arresting works continue the artist’s exploration of the perceptual and emotional effects of light, colour, and space.

Guided by curiosity and wonder, Robert Owen’s knowledge of colour is profound. In colour he nds harmony and melody, using chromatic combinations to achieve sensations that pulsate from the walls like sound waves or musical nuances. Afterglow at ARC ONE Gallery stems from one of Owen’s diary drawings executed while living on the Greek island of Hydra in the early 1960s. On the island, Owen witnessed an eclipse of the sun: an experience that has informed the artist’s enduring interest in the transcendent capacity of space, light, and colour.

Owen’s formative research and experiences of Constructivism and De Stijl are apparent in Afterglow where succinct geometric forms, vertical stripes, and squares of strong colour evoke the physical and metaphysical. Owen’s diary drawing from 1964, vibrant with its rework composition, perfectly encapsulates a synthetic moment and the relationship between time and progress. Describing the image, Owen draws on the paradox articulated by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard in his book, Intuition of the Instant, which posits life as an enduring string of moments that are in nite. It is this ash of illumination, combined with his poetic experiences on Hydra, from which Owen’s continued interest in the perceptual and emotional effects of space, light, and colour has materialised.

Robert Owen is an internationally recognised and award-winning artist with a sustained practice of more than ve decades. Working in painting, sculpture, installation, and photography, he has received widespread acclaim for his work, including major public commissions such as such as Webb Bridge, Docklands (in collaboration with Denton Corker Marshall), and the Craigieburn Bypass, Melbourne (in collaboration with Architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer). He represented Australia at the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978, and in 2003 he received the Australia Council Visual Arts/ Crafts Emeritus Award for a lifelong service to the visual arts. He is represented in public and private collections throughout Australia and internationally.

ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present In the White Square, a group exhibition exploring themes of new abstraction curated by Laura Lantieri. An opening reception will be held on Saturday 10 December, 4-6pm.

Showcasing the work of five Australian contemporary artists well-known for their use of abstraction as a primary visual language, In the White Square features Robert Owen, Jacky Redgate and Lydia Wegner, alongside invited artists Caleb Shea and Gemma Smith. Across a dynamic mix of sculpture and photo- based media, the artists in this exhibition are drawn together by a shared emphasis on formal concerns such as colour, form, space, light, optics and geometry.

The exhibition draws its title from two of the 20th century’s great pioneers of abstract art – Vasily Kandinsky’s In the Black Square (1923), and Kasimir Malevich’s White on White (1918) – while referring obliquely to the ‘white cube’ exhibition space that came to rise in the last century. Situated in the formerly industrial, oblong ‘white cube’ of ARC ONE Gallery, In the White Square also considers the ways in which these artists employ abstraction in the context of a broader historical trajectory.

Variously touching on constructivism, minimalism, and hard-edge painting among other influences, the works blend a pared minimal aesthetic with a more idiosyncratic and playful touch. They invite the viewer to decipher lines, contours, surface textures and reflections in an almost puzzle-solving process, while blocks of colour activate spaces and pulse, oscillating between real and inferred depths of field. Challenging our understanding of what we see and what we know through an eye-popping agenda of geometry, colour and form, the artists of In the White Square collectively interrogate the very act of viewing.

Please note ARC ONE Gallery will be closed from 18 December 2016 and reopen 24 January 2017.

Gemma Smith is represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney, & Milani Gallery, Brisbane.

ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present the latest exhibition by leading senior Australian artist, Robert Owen. In this self-titled solo show, Robert Owen presents a continuation of his celebrated Music for the Eyes and Text of Light series, with a new body of paintings and prints inspired by jazz, movement and light.

Employing a staccato-like language of abstraction and geometry, Owen’s vivid Jazz Junction (2014-16) paint- ings explore the relationship between 1950s jazz and optical arrangements of form and colour. His canvases translate musical elements of time, rhythm and pitch through an idiosyncratic and intuitive exploration of the colours and patterns in sound. While long-standing influences of Constructivism and the colour theories of Wassily Kandinsky remain, here Owen has also drawn on modernist painter Piet Mondrian – in particular, his famous New York City- and jazz-inspired Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942-43). With Owen’s resulting Blues for Mondrian series, bold gridlines frame vibrant pixels of colour that bounce on the canvas like fingers on the keys of a piano.

A set of large prints titled Inside the Crystal extends the artist’s continuous exploration of light and art’s capacity to capture mood and emotion through pigment. In these images colours across the spectrum refract and intersect, as along the edge of cut glass.

Owen’s visually-arresting works synthesise the cerebral with the emotional and sight with sound, highlighting how we perceive as humans through interrelated senses, also known as synaesthesia. This nexus of intellect and spirituality – or physical and metaphysical – is at the core of Owen’s practice, which for more than five decades has consistently sought to reconcile the fundamental human conditions of thinking and feeling.

Robert Owen is an internationally recognised and award-winning artist, with a practice that includes sculpture, installation, painting and photography. He has received widespread acclaim for his work on major public commissions such as Webb Bridge, Docklands (in collaboration with Denton Corker Marshall), and the Craigieburn Bypass, Melbourne (in collaboration with Architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer). He represented Australia at the 38th Venice Biennale in 1978, and in 2003 he received the Australia Council Visual Arts/ Crafts Emeritus Award for a lifelong service to the visual arts.
