JACKY REDGATE is showing work in the exhibition 'IN-Formalism' at the @casulapowerhouse

'IN-Formalism' witnesses the evolution of abstract non-objective art in Australia from 1968. The exhibition surveys the key generation of artists who have contributed to the ongoing language of abstract art. It presents these works alongside a wide range of artefacts in design, textiles, advertising, urban design, film and performance and reveals the influence this art-form had in our times.

The exhibition opens today and continues until 30 June.

Shaune Lakin, Senior Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia, has analysed JACKY REDGATE's artistic process in an important essay on colour photography for Artlink Magazine.

Lakin writes "Structurally, the negatives (and the positive prints conjured from them by Redgate and [master printer Sandra] Barnard) distil the fundamentals of colour photography: positive and negative, the chemical conversion of colour (and tone) to its complementary. There is also a mimetic aspect to this mirroring: it replicates the perceptual experience of colour in our bodies. The intelligence and rigor of this distillation no doubt reflects Redgate’s long-standing interest in the ways that disciplines such as physics and chemistry have sought to make sense of the sensational properties of colour – how we see it, how it affects us, how it is often difficult to see." .

The March issue of Artlink Magazine is on sale now.

ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present Light Throw (Mirrors) Fold /Unfold, a new exhibition by one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, Jacky Redgate.

For more than two decades Jacky Redgate has worked with mirrors and objects in her studio, exploring abstraction, light, space and reflection with remarkable photographic and sculptural outcomes. Perceptual systems such as linear perspective and Cartesian geometry and optics, which structures two-dimensional space into a simulation of the three-dimensional world, are a frequent motif in Redgate’s work.

In this exhibition Redgate extends her acclaimed and ongoing studio photographic series, Light Throw (Mirrors) commencing in 2009, with fresh experiments and revelations. Whereas the irony of her earlier Light Throw (Mirrors) works (2009 –) was that there are no mirrors in the photograph – we only see their projected light and objects floating on surfaces – commencing in 2013 the artist elaborates the studio set-up by physically folding the prop that she rebounds light onto, later placing mirrors on its folding surface. Then in Unfold 2016, Redgate attempted to escape the visual vortex of her screen, breaking the symmetry of the fold and discarding the mirrors.  In this new series Redgate returns to the fold and mirrors, systematically rotating different primary coloured panels that mix colour across either side of the fold, as well as recycling the mirrors that rebound light from a battery of multiple flashes. The viewer is confronted by a flattening of space and a shimmering optical effect from the material construction.

In all of Redgate’s iterations of her mirror works dating back to STRAIGHTCUT (2001–) she uses the 4 x 5-inch camera in a fixed position and she regularly describes herself as an ‘absent/presence’ in the work. Curator, Robert Leonard has recently observed that her mirror works – “... deranges the reciprocity between seer (photographer/viewer) and seen.  Despite all those mirrors, neither photographer nor camera are visible. Standing in Redgate’s place, we might feel that the image isn’t returning our gaze, but that it looks past us, looks awry. She/we aren’t the projected centre of the world’. [1]

Jacky Redgate is regarded as one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, with a practice extending four decades. Redgate’s career began in the context of late 1970s feminism, minimalism and conceptual art. She is known for her photographic and sculptural work using systems and logic. Working across photographic and object-based practices, Redgate has exhibited extensively within Australia and internationally since the end of the 1970s. Recent selected solo exhibitions include: WORK-TO-RULE (NEGATIVE), Kronenberg Wright Gallery, Sydney, 2018, Jacky Redgate Light Throw (Mirrors) #1-10, 2018, Latrobe Regional Gallery; Jacky Redgate: Mirrors, University Art Gallery, the University of Sydney (2015); Jacky Redgate: the Logic of Vision, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2012); Visions From Her Bed, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); Jacky Redgate: Life of the System 1980–2005, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2005–06); and Jacky Redgate: Survey 1980–2003, Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Adelaide (2004). She is a recipient of the 1st prize, Bowness Photography Prize, Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne (2011). Her work is included in major national collections and survey exhibitions including two Australian Perspecta exhibitions, three Biennales of Sydney, the Clemenger Art Award at the National Gallery of Victoria (2006), and the Heide Museum of Modern Art’s Cubism & Australian Art (2009).

Robert Owen, Pink & Grey Wall, 1978, drymounted inkjet print, 72 x 47 cm.

ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present In the White Square, a group exhibition exploring themes of new abstraction curated by Laura Lantieri. An opening reception will be held on Saturday 10 December, 4-6pm.

Showcasing the work of five Australian contemporary artists well-known for their use of abstraction as a primary visual language, In the White Square features Robert Owen, Jacky Redgate and Lydia Wegner, alongside invited artists Caleb Shea and Gemma Smith. Across a dynamic mix of sculpture and photo- based media, the artists in this exhibition are drawn together by a shared emphasis on formal concerns such as colour, form, space, light, optics and geometry.

The exhibition draws its title from two of the 20th century’s great pioneers of abstract art – Vasily Kandinsky’s In the Black Square (1923), and Kasimir Malevich’s White on White (1918) – while referring obliquely to the ‘white cube’ exhibition space that came to rise in the last century. Situated in the formerly industrial, oblong ‘white cube’ of ARC ONE Gallery, In the White Square also considers the ways in which these artists employ abstraction in the context of a broader historical trajectory.

Variously touching on constructivism, minimalism, and hard-edge painting among other influences, the works blend a pared minimal aesthetic with a more idiosyncratic and playful touch. They invite the viewer to decipher lines, contours, surface textures and reflections in an almost puzzle-solving process, while blocks of colour activate spaces and pulse, oscillating between real and inferred depths of field. Challenging our understanding of what we see and what we know through an eye-popping agenda of geometry, colour and form, the artists of In the White Square collectively interrogate the very act of viewing.

Please note ARC ONE Gallery will be closed from 18 December 2016 and reopen 24 January 2017.

Gemma Smith is represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney, & Milani Gallery, Brisbane.

ARC ONE Gallery is delighted to present a new exhibition by one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, Jacky Redgate. Light Throw (Mirrors) Fold will open on Tuesday 21 June, 6-8pm, with the Melbourne Launch of the Power Publications monograph, Jacky Redgate: Mirrors. The book will be formally launched by Dr Edward Colless, Head of Critical and Theoretical Studies, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.

Jacky Redgate’s Light Throw (Mirrors) Fold / Unfold is the latest instalment in her mirror-works project. It follows hard on the heels of her Mirrors exhibition at the University Art Gallery at the University of Sydney last year. Redgate’s studio still-life photography experiments continue her long-standing interests in window display and product lighting, reflections and optical illusions. In the early Light Throw (Mirrors) Fold photographs, she explores the optical interplay of mirrors and everyday objects (striped plates, rulers, dominoes) attached to a folding screen.

In Unfold (2016), Redgate attempts to escape the visual vortex of her screen and mirrors, by displaying a doll, coasters, spoons, and a child’s sewing machine on pink velvet in the fold of her screen. It has been 36 years since Redgate last played with dolls in her work. Is she giving the subject of her recent photograph Miss Pears’ Contest Photographs 1959 — herself at age 3 — toys to play with, or is something else afoot? This new work connects Redgate’s well-known interest in the mirror photographs of Florence Henri with her little-known interest in American photographer Dare Wright, author of the 1957 children’s book The Lonely Doll.

With a practice extending over 35 years, Jacky Redgate has established herself as an artist at the forefront of contemporary Australian art. Working across photographic and object-based practices, Redgate has exhibited extensively within Australia and internationally since the end of the 1970s. Selected solo exhibitions include: Jacky Redgate: Mirrors, University Art Gallery, the University of Sydney (2015); Jacky Redgate: the Logic of Vision, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2012); Visions From Her Bed, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); Jacky Redgate: Life of the System 1980–2005, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2005–06); and Jacky Redgate: Survey 1980–2003, Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Adelaide (2004). Jacky Redgate is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts, English and Media, University of Wollongong, Australia.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
